On Oct 1st 2011, the Belgian Solvay Umicore Racing team broke the world record for the 1/8 mile sprint by a hydrogen powered vehicle at the Belgian Masters on the famous Zolder Circuit. A new record time of 10.23 seconds was set. This broke the previously held record by 0.17 seconds. The 1/4 mile sprint was also broken with a new world record time of 19.28 seconds. The kart was built by engineering students with the support of Belgian companies Umicore and Solvay.
