The Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) and Proterra's project team have delivered a Proterra fuel cell powered bus to Austin,Texas, for Phase II of its demonstation period as part of the the National Fuel Cell Bus Program (NFCBP).
This bus features two Hydrogenics HyPM™ HD16 fuel cells. Hydrogenics will also be providing CTE support throughout the project.
The Proterra Fuel Cell bus is unique in that, unlike most fuel cell buses that are built from renovated diesel buses, this one was purposely built from the ground up as a zero emission fuel cell bus. The 37 seater bus with a capacity of 64 people features Hydrogenics fuel cell systems, plug in rechargeable batteries, and an all electric drive train, allowing it to have only water vapour as an emission.
After training the drivers about the new technologies associated with the fueling and charging systems of the bus it will then join Capital Metro's fleet and will be operated in a regular transit service.
