Initial Markets Driven by Operational Advantages

Much attention has been given to the possibility of using fuel cells in automobiles in place of the internal combustion engine. This is where ‘the dream’ has been visualized. However, the fact is that we will see fuel cells in other applications before we see large-scale adoption on our roads.

New technologies are almost always adopted into niche markets first….markets where competitive ‘cost of purchase’ is not the driving adoption factor. Rather, it is operational advantages that are the driving factor. This is where fuel cells are now in certain niche mobility and stationary backup power markets. The adoption factor in these and other niche markets is that the new technology has capabilities that incumbent technologies do not – capabilities that make enough of a difference to create a compelling business case today.

In upcoming years we expect to see growing markets where fuel cell technology will gain commercial traction, making it an important part of our energy future.
